Introduction of National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a youth-oriented voluntary Programme launched by the Government of India with the objective of developing the personality and character of students through community service. It aims to inculcate the values of social responsibility, discipline, leadership, and national integration among young learners.

The motto of NSS is “Not Me, But You”, which reflects the spirit of selfless service and concern for the welfare of society. NSS provides students with opportunities to actively participate in social service activities such as literacy campaigns, health awareness Programmes, environmental protection, disaster management, and rural development. Through these activities, students gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of societal problems.

NSS plays an important role in bridging the gap between educational institutions and the community. It encourages students to work among people from different social and economic backgrounds, thereby promoting empathy, cooperation, and mutual respect. Volunteers actively participate in activities like blood donation camps, cleanliness drives, tree plantation Programmes, awareness rallies, and campaigns on social issues such as gender equality, health, hygiene, and drug abuse prevention.

History of National Service Scheme (NSS)

The concept of involving students in community service and national development was deeply influenced by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed that young people should actively contribute to the progress and welfare of society. To utilize the strength, enthusiasm, and potential of students for constructive social activities, the Government of India introduced the National Service Scheme (NSS) on 24 September 1969, marking the birth centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi.

At the time of its launch, NSS started in 37 universities with nearly 40,000 student volunteers. The Programme was placed under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. With the passage of time, NSS witnessed remarkable growth and gradually expanded to colleges, universities, and higher secondary institutions throughout the country. Today, it stands as one of the largest youth volunteer organizations in the world, engaging millions of students in community service and nation-building activities.

The main objective of NSS is to develop the personality of students through active participation in social service. The Programme seeks to create a close relationship between educational institutions and the community by encouraging students to understand social issues and contribute towards solving them. Through various activities, students learn the values of discipline, cooperation, leadership, and social responsibility.

NSS volunteers participate in numerous welfare activities such as environmental protection campaigns, literacy drives, health and hygiene awareness Programmes, blood donation camps, disaster relief work, rural development projects, and cleanliness initiatives. These activities help students gain practical experience while developing empathy and concern for society.

The motto of NSS, “Not Me But You,” highlights the importance of selfless service and collective welfare. It encourages students to place community interests above personal gain and work together for the betterment of society. NSS also promotes national integration, communal harmony, and democratic values among young citizens.

Objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS)

To identify the needs and problems of the community: NSS enables volunteers to recognize social issues such as illiteracy, poverty, health hazards, and environmental degradation.
